Bugout bag! Which One?

schiffe royal navy I had a friend ping me recently on which pack for a bugout bag I would suggest. The short answer is the ILBE system of main ruck, and assault pack. So here is a little history The ILBE (Improved Load Bearing Equipment) was a replacement program for the Marine Corps MOLLE ( Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment), and in some cases ALICE ( All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment) gear. This is not your everyday piece of military surplus. The ILBE was designed by a leader in in the backpack industry, and that leader is Arc’teryx. Rumors have it the the ILBE is based on the Bora 95. In the graphic below you can see this pack averaged in the 400 dollar space. You can buy a complete ILBE system for under 100 bucks on ebay. bora95

http://feelcaptain.live/2019/06 arbeit tedi cloppenburg So if this pack is so awesome, why is it now a surplus item that is no longer being used? That answer is simple, body armor! The system was designed before the Modular Tactical Vest (MTV) was put into use in the Marine Corps. They did not work well together, so they kept the vest, and went back to the drawing board on a pack. For a while they tested the Arc’teryx Antaeus, and eventually landed on the current FILBE/MDM design that I have read a lot of people hate. So for many of them it is back to the ALICE design with the malice pack.

My second favorite is based on and ALICE/MOLLE called the Hellcat mod in most of the prepper community. One of my metrics is cost  vs value, my budget is generally under  a 100 bucks. Like with everything, this is my suggestion to answer a very specific question. Be looking for upcoming posts on my families bucket solution, and what goes in it. As well as what I keep in my vehicle.A few packs

The $300 GoTenna turns your smartphone into a CB radio

cadeau point super u The $300 GoTenna turns your smartphone into a CB radio, lets you send messages when you have no cell signal. This is promising tech. It would be incredible in an emergency. The huge negative is that it only transmits to other goTenna’s. If it transmitted over frs, or gmrs frequencies it would be that much more appealing. Early adopters can get a pair for 150.00 after that it jumps to 300.00

My search for an inexpensive forest axe

billet finale coupe du monde So in my search for a forest axe I have decided to take the low road. We all know of the big names Gransfors Bruks, Hultafors Bruks, Wetterlings etc. But a lot of people do not know that Husqvarna axes have been made by the big names for years. So I recently ordered the Husqvarna Multi-Purpose Forest Axe. I did not like the fit and finish of the axe at all. I knew it would be rough, because I have bought husky axes before. I have ordered another and will be updating this post then. First lets look at the axe overall.

vorschlag merkel kohlekraftwerk reduzierung Blade edge is ground very roughly, but it is sharp. This is pretty easily fixed, as I would have done some re-profiling anyway.

In this photo it looks like there is a crack in the bit left over from forging. I may be picky. But I do not like this either.

the overall alignment of the grain in the handle is not horrible. Could be better, could be worse.

Battlehorseknives first monthly special

I have to say this is one of the nicest looking knives I have seen in quite a while. It is 9 1/2″ over all length  and a 4 1/2″ cutting edge, 5/32″ O-1 tool steel with green/black resiten handles, scandi grind, bow drill divit in the handle, kydex/leather sheath and lots of awesomeness. Got get in now while you can it is 175 bucks plus shipping. Go here to snag it.

New collaboration on bushcraft knives between Dave Canterbury and ESEE knives

Everybody who knows me, knows I am a Dave Canterbury fan. I also own many ESEE knives, and products. With one of my favorites being the candiru. ( here is a pic of my personal candiru)

One of the things ESEE does not do well is bushcraft knives. If you are going to be surviving in a wooded area. A bushcraft knife I think would be preferred over a standard survival knife. One of my favorites is my woodsman, and woodsman pro from blind horse knives (now Battlehorseknives).

I am pretty excited to see what comes out of this collaboration. See the video from shot show below. It looks like the knives they show, are following the above knife design.

Do you own an AR-15? Have you looked at .300 AAC Blackout?

Sootch does a good job explaining the differences, and why you should consider .300 for you next build, or upper.

Army getting OCP as primary camo pattern

Just reading an article over on predatorbdu.com. Looks like OCP will now be the official camo pattern for the US Army. I have to say it is about time, it is my favorite pattern. It kills me every time I see them in ACU camo. It will mean that there will be a crapload of ACU hitting ebay. While the pattern is horrible, surplus gear can’t be matched in quality, and durability. I will keep you posted on deals in the near future. To give you an idea of the patterns, I laid out a few molle assault packs.
